Bernie Parent leading the Flyers to a victory

Bernie Parent, Conn Smythe Award winner when the Flyers won Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975 and a hockey Hall of Fame member since 1984, will be recognized with the Philadelphia Sports Living Legend Award at the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s 105th annual Award Dinner on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009.

Parent was an original Flyer, drafted from the Boston Bruins for the 1967-68 season, and played 13 seasons in the NHL, with the Flyers, Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs. In 618 games, he had a career 2.55 goals-against-average and 54 shutouts.

But it was the playoffs where he was at his best, with a 2.43 average and 6 shutouts in 71 Stanley Cup games. His most famous shutouts came in the clinching Games 6 in ‘74 and ‘75, 1-0 over Boston and 2-0 over the Buffalo Sabres.

Bernie joins his teammate Bobby Clarke as a Flyer to be recognized as a Living Legend.

Bernie Parent will be one of many stars on the dais at the Sports Writers Award Dinner. Some others with him will be Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, accepting the 2008 Team of the Year Award for the Phillies, former Penn State football player Adam Taliaferro (Humanitarian), and West Chester’s record-setting wide receiver Mike Washington (Amateur Athlete).

Also on the dais will be former 76er Darryl Dawkins, NFL Films boss Steve Sabol, U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning soccer star Carli Lloyd, and the MVP of the Dec. 6 Army - Navy game.

    Hey Bernie thanks for the autograph at the comedy show the other night that really means alot to me and my son loves the flyers and he was so excited that i got a Liveing Legend’s autograph.I tell him about you guys all the time,he wants to be a hockey player when he gets older now me and my wife are going to put him in hockey and he is 7 now he’s a very big flyers fan just like me. I took him to a game this year and we loved it im going to take him agian sometime soon hopefully and he would like to meet a legend like you. Thanks so much agian for the autograph. GO FLYERS !!!
