Drexel's Gabriela Marginean

She was not a major recruit when she entered Drexel University as a freshman, but Gabriela Marginean has proven to be a major player in Philadelphia college basketball.

The native of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, already the highest scorer in Drexel history, could become the highest scoring women’s player in Philadelphia history by the end of this season. But even before that she’ll be recognized as the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s Outstanding Amateur Athlete for 2009.

Currently at 2,010 points scored in three-plus seasons, Marginean needs 405 points to surpass Penn’s Diana Caramanico for the all-time city record. That would be an average of 18 points per game for the regular season, and since Marginean has not scored at that low of an average since her freshman year (currently scoring 22.3 points per game), the record should be hers.

Averaging 16.6 points as a freshman, 19.0 as a sophomore and 23.3 last season, Marginean is one of the leading scorers in the nation. Last year she was named the MVP of the Colonial Athletic Association as the Dragons reached the NCAA Tournament. Besides the 23.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, she also led the nation in free throw shooting (243-271, 91.5%). For her career, she’s hit an amazing 89.2% of her free throws (551-618).

An outstanding junior tennis player in Romania, Marginean played that sport for Drexel as a freshman and sophomore, earning third-team all-conference honors as a freshman.

Gabriela Marginean will be among the honored guests at the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s 106th annual Awards Dinner on Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Doors open at 5 p.m., and dinner starts at 6:30.

Tickets are $75, and they are available to the public. Click here to purchase tickets online.
